TecQuipment Student Competition May 2024

Celebrating Innovation and Learning: The TecQuipment 2024 Student Competition

On May 13th, TecQuipment proudly crowned the winner of the 2024 student competition. The victorious team received individual certificates of participation, a $1,150 prize, and a custom-made TecQuipment trophy for their outstanding video entry. Their project, which focused on Friction Factor Estimation using TecQuipment’s Friction Loss in a Pipe apparatus (H7) attached to a Digital Hydraulic Bench (H1F), showcased their innovation and technical prowess.

A Stage for Engineering Excellence

This year our competition had participation from prestigious institutions and returning American North-East Coast rivals from the University of Michigan-Flint and York College of Pennsylvania. Having previously battled against each other in the 2023 student competition, would there be a two-time defending champion or a new victor!

Participants submitted a three to five-minute video that investigated engineering theories or concepts using TecQuipment teaching equipment, aiming to practically test and verify their chosen topics.

Rigorous Evaluation and Reward

The submissions were evaluated based on criteria including the research question, experimental design, procedure, analysis, and presentation effectiveness. All participants received certificates of participation, with the top entries from each institution earning $150 in prize money.

The top two video entries then advanced to the Grand Finale, where their videos underwent further scrutiny. After a thorough evaluation by our expert judges, Team 2 from York College of Pennsylvania emerged victorious, taking the crown from the University of Michigan-Flint.

Their winning entry focused on comparing five friction factor estimation theories for laminar and turbulent flow in pipes, involving TecQuipment’s Friction Loss in a Pipe Apparatus (H7) attached to a Hydraulic Bench (H1F) to measure the flow rate of velocities and head losses. The experiment’s purpose was to determine the best approximation method that can be applied when estimating the friction factor in pipes. This can be applied in the design for smooth pipes or more accurate use in the greater academia. Results from this experiment will aid in the future use of theories in academia as well as application for this type of apparatus.

The team's professional presentation, detailed analysis, and real-world application relevance set them apart. Find out why there where the campions here: https://youtu.be/9KLTjtXYQ-E

The Importance of Competitions in Engineering Education

Competitions like ours are pivotal in enhancing engineering education. They not only foster enthusiasm for using and engaging with TecQuipment products but also offer financial support to aid students in their studies. More importantly, these competitions prepare students for their future careers by:

  • Proving Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrating a deep understanding of theory and practical application through visual evidence.
  • Developing Soft Skills: Enhancing team working, communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills through collaborative projects.
  • Learning New Skills: Acquiring skills beyond engineering, such as video production and editing, which are valuable for future projects.
  • Building an Industry Portfolio: Creating a project portfolio that helps students stand out in job applications.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Our competitions are designed to cement students' understanding of engineering principles while providing opportunities to win prizes and gain recognition. We hope all participants used this experience to learn more about themselves, develop new skills, and deepen their understanding of engineering concepts.

Let’s see who, out of University of Michigan-Flint and York College of Pennsylvania, will take the title of winner next year. Or will a new entrant come in and steal the win from our long-term competitors? Be in the competition for your chance to win!
